This year, the ABATE motorcycle toy run will be a daylong community event. The annual ABATE of Florida Brevard Chapter Toy Run – which was a major event that used to shut down traffic entirely for more than several miles- is cancelled as a result of 22-year old’s death at last year’s event.
There is no Toy Run this year because of the accident. The accident was excessively tragic and the organizers decided to make sure something like that never happens again. The annual ABATE of Florida Brevard Chapter Toy Run – a mainstay that shut down traffic for several miles as motorcycles rumbled from the Merritt Square Mall to Wickham Park – was shut down as a result of the death of a 22-year-old Rockledge spectator struck and killed during the event last year. Some of the riders would dress as Santa Claus, others rode shotgun with toys strapped to holiday-decorated bikes.
Bikers used to show up on their motorcycles dressed as Santas, with lots of colorful toys attached to their motorcycles. It was exciting for everyone – the kids, the bikers, and everyone who witnessed the annual event. Sadly, this tradition is affected by the tragic incident.
